Claudia Conway, the daughter of former Donald Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway, has taken a swipe at her mother following her recent comments aimed at Democrats.
During an appearance on Fox News' Outnumbered on December 20, Kellyanne Conway sparked a social media backlash when she took aim at Democrats over issues such as abortion and climate change.
"I think Democrats wake up every morning and they look at the calendar on the iPhone and it says January 6. The date never changes. And then they get into an electric vehicle and go get an abortion," the Fox News contributor said.
Conway was mocking popular Democratic stances, including abortion rights; how the use of electric vehicles could help curb climate change; and that the U.S. Capitol riot of January 6, 2021, was an attack on U.S. democracy and that those responsible for the incident should face legal repercussions.
Weeks later, her 19-year-old daughter Claudia Conway made a thinly-veiled reference to those comments when she made a return to X, formerly Twitter, over the weekend following a lengthy absence.
Seemingly addressing her previous social media silence, Claudia Conway pointed to the same talking points raised by her mother in a tongue-in-cheek post.
"Hi sorry I'm back," she began the post. "I've been driving my electric car to get hundreds of third trimester abortions on January 6, 2021."
Claudia Conway's post, which has been viewed more than 1.4 million times, was noted by one X user for the "shade" being thrown at her mother. "LOL. Nothing like trolling mom," commented another.
Claudia Conway also appeared to reference November's upcoming election, writing in another X post that said, "we need to just fast forward to 2028 and skip all this s***."
Kellyanne Conway appeared on Fox News to criticize the Colorado Supreme Court's decision to bar Trump from the state's 2024 GOP primary. The court ruled last week that under the 14th Amendment Trump was banned from holding public office due to his alleged actions during and related to the January 6 attack on the Capitol.
On Thursday, Maine became the second state to remove Trump from its 2024 ballot, preventing him from participating in its primary in March. Trump is facing federal charges in connection to his alleged actions leading up to the riot.
Trump has maintained his innocence and said that he did not engage in an insurrection, accusing those filing lawsuits against him of attempting election interference. Meanwhile, the Colorado Republican Party has also filed an appeal against the state's decision, which will bring the case to the U.S. Supreme Court.
The frontrunner for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination, Trump faces legal challenges that seek to remove him from the ballot in a number of other states. The lawsuits argue that Trump is ineligible to run under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, which bars officials who have sworn an oath to the U.S. Constitution from holding office if they engaged in insurrection.
In a since-deleted X post, Claudia Conway, who has been a frequent critic of Trump, addressed the issue as she wrote over the weekend: "Guys my two favorite states are Maine and Colorado right now buttttt I'm not sure why."
Newsweek has contacted Kellyanne Conway via email for comment.
Claudia Conway and her father, Lincoln Project co-founder George Conway, emerged in 2020 as vocal critics of Trump and his presidency, despite Kellyanne Conway's position in the onetime real estate mogul's administration.
Kellyanne Conway is a former pollster who rose to national prominence as the manager of Trump's successful 2016 presidential campaign, later transitioning to a senior adviser role in the Trump White House. She has also developed a reputation as a Trump media surrogate, known for defending his many claims and stances across various news outlets.
Over the years, and throughout a tumultuous period in relationship with her mother, Claudia Conway has remained vocally opposed to the former president and many conservative political pursuits, including the overturning of Roe v. Wade.
Around the time she first began publicly speaking out against Trump in 2020, Claudia Conway also hinted at turmoil in her relationship with her parents, claiming at the time to be "officially pushing for emancipation."
By the summer of 2021, Claudia Conway revealed in a TikTok post that she was on good terms with her mother, despite their political differences. On July 7, she tweeted a screenshot of a text exchange in which her mother informed her of the release of a new Taylor Swift album. She also often has friendly online interactions with her father.
In November 2023, Kellyanne Conway was praised by her daughter for accepting her as gay in a speech at an event hosted by the Log Cabin Republicans, an organization that represents LGBTQ+ members of the GOP.
Claudia Conway introduced her mother at the Spirit of Lincoln Gala, where her mother had been named as the 2023 Spirit of Lincoln Award recipient. Per the Log Cabin Republicans, the award was previously given to former first lady Melania Trump in 2021 for her "commitment to enhancing personal freedom, encouraging individual responsibility, and ensuring equality for all Americans."
Footage shared on social media showed Claudia Conway telling the audience: "It is an honor and a privilege to stand here tonight to introduce a woman who has not only saved my life, but has also left an indelible mark on the United States forever.
"In a world where the political climate has become harsh and divisive, coming out as gay was something that I feared. I feared not being accepted by my family and my community. But that was very far from the truth."
"My mother's support was not just a passive acknowledgment, but an active, affirming stance that not only supported myself, but millions of Americans," she went on. "We now live in the age of performative politics. We are surrounded by people who talk and talk and talk, but never do. My mom not only talks—a lot—but she is one of the few people who actually does."
