JOB DESCRIPTION
Under direction of the Director of Human Resources and Director of Administration, the Human Resources Manager performs a variety of human resources operations duties, including the interviewing and selection of candidates, conducting onboarding of attorneys and staff, performance management, and employee relations. The Human Resources Manager will manage the Charlotte office Legal Administrative Assistants (LAAs), including pairing assignments and allocation of workloads. Responsible for the coordination and communication of payroll, benefits, welfare, wellness, and retirement plans. The successful candidate will be able to execute, interpret, and implement local and Federal labor laws in compliance with Alston & Bird standards, have strong organizational skills, meticulous attention to detail and accuracy; excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to multitask and thrive under tight deadlines.
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE, BUT NOT LIMITED TO
- Must understand and apply Federal and State employment laws.
- Monitor and manage appropriate legal administrative assistant staffing ratios and workflow to meet firm's administrative support targets.
- Confer with attorneys, paralegals and legal administrative assistants regarding assignments, performance problems and need for additional training.
- Manage LAA PTO, timesheets, and overtime requests.
- Manage business case submissions for headcount or replacement requests, including working with legal and administrative group leaders to ensure appropriate business needs.
- Generate new hire, departure and change notifications for the Charlotte office.
- Coordinate & conduct New Hire Onboarding for all newly hired attorneys and staff in the Charlotte office.
- Conduct annual market compensation assessment for legal support staff in the Charlotte office.
- Manage the annual evaluation process for all staff in the Charlotte office.
- Serve as a resource to all Charlotte managers on staff related management issues offering coaching, guidance, and adherence to firm protocols.
- Work with broader HR team on a wide variety of global HR initiatives and projects across multiple HR disciplines, including, but not limited to: compensation, diversity and inclusion, governance and policy, change management, talent management, performance management, HRIS, and acquisition integration.
- Collaborate with the Charlotte Diversity Committee on D&I staff initiatives.
- Works closely with the firm-wide Benefits Department in Atlanta to provide information to lawyers and staff in the Charlotte office to ensure that benefit programs are administered in accordance with established procedure.
- Conduct exit interviews, as assigned, for administrative staff.
- Coordinate educational workshops with staff development team including dates, topics and the tracking of attendance.
- Attend HR department meetings.
- Recognize potential legal issues (e.g. sexual harassment, discrimination, termination) and discuss with appropriate resources for direction and guidance.
- Work closely with the firm-wide Administrative Officers, Directors, and Managers to ensure that firm-wide practices and procedures are followed.
- Serve as a member of the Firm's Executive Staff.
- Maintains all employee's employment records and files in an organized and accurate manner.
- Manages timekeeping activities for the office, including ensuring all timecards are approved, answering questions about timekeeping and coordinate with Payroll, as necessary.
SKILLS NEEDED TO BE SUCESSFUL
- Minimum of 5 years' previous HR experience with a preference for candidates from a law firm or professional services setting or a combination of experience and education.
- Previous supervisory experience of 3-5 years in a related environment, preferred.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Demonstrates teamwork, creativity, a desire for continuous improvement, and commitment to the profession.
- Commitment to providing superior customer service.
- Ability to interact effectively with people at all levels of the firm.
- Thorough organizational skills for prioritizing workload and recruiting efforts.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to work under pressure, and deal with demanding deadlines; strong attention to detail and team-oriented attitude.
- Thorough knowledge of Firm systems and procedures to efficiently meet Firm personnel demands.
- Advanced technical skills including prior experience with Workday.
EDUCATION
- Bachelor's degree in related field
- PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP certification strongly desired.
